Design Overview & Tactical Role
The AMX-30 was France's answer to modern Cold War tank warfare. Built under the French doctrine that speed and superior optics outweighed passive armor, it possessed a notably low silhouette and an uncommonly versatile secondary armament: a 20 mm autocannon capable of elevating +40° to engage low-flying helicopters and light armor. It fired the innovative 'Obus G' shaped-charge round whose outer body spun with the rifling while the inner shaped charge remained non-rotating on ball bearings.
Combat History & Battle Records
Entering French service in 1966, the modernized AMX-30B2 distinguished itself during Operation Daguet (the 1991 Gulf War), spearheading the coalition's western flank thrust into Iraq and capturing As-Salman airfield with zero combat tank losses.
