Design Overview & Tactical Role
The IS-3 shocked the Western world when 52 brand-new tanks rolled through the Allied Victory Parade in Berlin on September 7, 1945. Featuring revolutionary geometry that influenced tank design for the subsequent 40 years, it introduced the famous 'Pike Nose' (a pointed prow of two triangular steel plates angled sharply inward) and a low-slung, rounded, dome-shaped cast turret that maximized ricochet probability against enemy fire.
Combat History & Battle Records
Arriving just after the cessation of hostilities in Germany, the IS-3 inspired NATO to develop heavy counter-tanks like the American M103 and British Conqueror. In Egyptian service during the 1967 Six-Day War, IS-3s proved extremely difficult for Israeli tank guns to penetrate frontally.
