Design Overview & Tactical Role
Rushed into production during the Korean War crisis, the M47 combined the proven chassis of the M46 with the redesigned needle-nose turret of the experimental T42. It was notable for being the last American production tank to feature a five-man crew (including a bow machine gunner) and pioneered the use of the M12 optical stereoscopic rangefinder.
Combat History & Battle Records
Although it saw limited US frontline combat before being replaced by the M48, thousands of M47s were transferred under the Military Assistance Program to bolster NATO allies (West Germany, France, Italy, Turkey) and saw action in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 and the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
