Design Overview & Tactical Role

The Swedish Stridsvagn 103 ('S-Tank') is one of the most uniquely radical armored vehicle designs ever fielded. Dispensing completely with a rotating turret to achieve an ultra-low defensive profile, its 105 mm gun was rigidly fixed to the hull. To aim the gun, the driver pivoted the tank tracks for azimuth and adjusted the hydropneumatic suspension to pitch the entire hull up or down. It featured a dual diesel-gas turbine powerpack and a rear-facing driver who could reverse at full speed.

Combat History & Battle Records

Designed by Sven Berge for the Swedish Army to defend Scandinavia's forested topography against Soviet invasion, the S-Tank served from 1967 to 1997. In comparative NATO trials against the Leopard 1 and Centurion, the S-Tank demonstrated superior first-round hit speed from concealed ambush positions.
