Design Overview & Tactical Role

The T-72 is arguably the definitive Soviet main battle tank of the late 20th century. Developed as a more reliable, mass-producible alternative to the complex T-64, it paired the 125 mm 2A46 gun and an electromechanical carousel autoloader with a rugged V-46 diesel engine. Produced by the tens of thousands, it was exported to dozens of armies and formed the foundation of Warsaw Pact armored doctrine.

Combat History & Battle Records

Entering service in 1973, the T-72 fought in the 1982 Lebanon War, the Iran-Iraq War, the 1991 Gulf War, the Chechen Wars, and Syrian Civil War. Continually modernized as the T-72B3 with thermal sights and explosive reactive armor, it remains a primary operational combatant across Eurasia today.
