Design Overview & Tactical Role

The Type 59 (WZ-120) was the foundational rock upon which the entire modern Chinese armored vehicle industry was established. Initially produced as a direct licensed replica of the Soviet T-54A at Factory 617 in Baotou, Chinese engineers subsequently upgraded it across dozens of iterations with domestic 105 mm rifled guns, laser rangefinders, ERA, and computerized sights.

Combat History & Battle Records

Entering PLA service in 1959, it fought in the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979 and was exported extensively to Pakistan (as the Al-Zarrar), Iran, Iraq, and African nations. Over 10,000 units were manufactured, making it a cornerstone of 20th-century geopolitical conflict.
