Design Overview & Tactical Role

The C1 Ariete is the primary main battle tank of the Italian Army, engineered by the Iveco-Oto Melara consortium to ensure national defense autonomy during the late Cold War. Equipped with a digital TURMS-FCS fire control system and an Oto Melara 120 mm smoothbore gun, the tank is currently undergoing an extensive AMV (Aggiornamento di Mezza Vita) mid-life upgrade program that elevates engine power to 1,500 hp and installs reinforced armor.

Combat History & Battle Records

Deliveries commenced in 1995 to re-equip elite Italian armored formations such as the 132nd Armored Brigade 'Ariete'. Ariete units were deployed operationally during Operation Ancient Babylon in Iraq (2004) to guard coalition convoys and critical infrastructure around Nasiriyah.
