Design Overview & Tactical Role
Renowned for legendary passive survivability, the British Challenger 2 is wrapped in Dorchester composite armor, an advanced secret evolution of Chobham. Uniquely among contemporary NATO MBTs, it retains a 120 mm L30A1 rifled gun capable of firing High Explosive Squash Head (HESH) rounds to devastating effect against fortifications, alongside sabot penetrators. The tank also holds the record for the longest tank-to-tank kill in combat history (4.7 km in Iraq).
Combat History & Battle Records
Designed by Vickers Defence Systems as a comprehensive redevelopment of the Challenger 1, the tank entered British Army service in 1998. It demonstrated extraordinary durability during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, surviving multiple RPG-29 and Milan missile strikes with no crew fatalities.
