Design Overview & Tactical Role

The Challenger 3 is the revolutionary conversion of the British Army's tank fleet into an ultra-lethal 21st-century platform. Developed by RBSL in Telford, it replaces the rifled L30 gun with the high-velocity Rheinmetall L/55A1 smoothbore—finally unifying British ammo logistics with NATO standard DM63/DM73 APFSDS penetrators. It incorporates the Rafael Trophy Medium Variant APS and EPSOM/FARNHAM advanced modular armor.

Combat History & Battle Records

Formally awarded in 2021 as part of the UK's Future Soldier modernization agenda, 148 Challenger 2 tanks are being fully converted into Challenger 3s, with initial live-fire trials concluding in 2024.
