Design Overview & Tactical Role
The Leopard 2A6 was the defining European tank upgrade of the early 2000s. Its decisive advancement was the introduction of the Rheinmetall 120 mm L/55 gun, whose barrel length is 1.3 meters longer than the older L/44, granting higher muzzle velocity and dramatically superior armor penetration against heavy reactive composite armors. It features the distinctive arrowhead wedge turret armor.
Combat History & Battle Records
Accepted into the Bundeswehr in 2001, the 2A6 saw high-intensity combat with Canadian armed forces in Kandahar, Afghanistan, surviving massive mine explosions. In 2023, Germany, Portugal, and partner nations delivered Leopard 2A6s to Ukraine for counter-offensive operations in Zaporizhzhia.
