Design Overview & Tactical Role
Designed with crew preservation as the paramount priority, the Israeli Merkava Mk 4M places its engine forward in the chassis to provide an immense physical shield for the fighting crew. It features an integrated rear evacuation hatch capable of carrying wounded soldiers or dismounted infantry, an internal 60mm mortar, and the combat-proven Rafael Trophy Active Protection System ('Windbreaker') which has intercepted hundreds of ATGMs and RPGs in dense urban environments.
Combat History & Battle Records
Conceived under General Israel Tal following the brutal tank battles of the Yom Kippur War (1973), the Merkava series entered service in 1979. The Mk 4M entered frontline units in 2011, establishing combat history in Gaza and southern Lebanon as the first tank in history to successfully neutralize hostile anti-tank missiles in actual combat with hard-kill active protection.
