Design Overview & Tactical Role
While the heavy Type 99A is reserved for strategic armored spearheads, the Type 96B serves as the ubiquitous, cost-effective backbone of the PLA Ground Force. The 'B' variant features a significantly upgraded 1,200 hp engine, enhanced thermal imaging, new digital communications, and an upgraded transmission that famously demonstrated blistering obstacle runs at the international Tank Biathlon.
Combat History & Battle Records
Evolving from the Type 85 and Type 90-II programs, the Type 96 entered service in the late 1990s. With over 2,500 vehicles in service across all variants, it forms the most numerous tank class in modern Chinese armored formations.
