Design Overview & Tactical Role
Widely praised as the finest tank destroyer of World War II, the Jagdpanther ('Hunting Panther') united the reliable, mobile chassis of the Panther medium tank with the long 8.8 cm Pak 43 L/71 anti-tank gun in an elegant, unbroken sloped front casemate. Possessing superior armor, low silhouette, and immense ballistic reach, it could destroy any Allied tank from long range.
Combat History & Battle Records
Deployed with heavy tank destroyer battalions (schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilungen), the Jagdpanther gained fame in Normandy when three Jagdpanthers from s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 ambushed a British Churchill tank squadron near Les Loges in July 1944, destroying 10 or 11 tanks in approximately two minutes.
