Design Overview & Tactical Role
The Saint-Chamond was France's second tank of the Great War, designed by FAMH as an armed box mounting the formidable Canon de 75 mm modèle 1897—the premier field gun of the era. It pioneered an advanced Crochat-Collardeau petrol-electric hybrid transmission that provided smooth stepless steering. However, its immense front and rear hull overhangs caused it to dig nose-first into trench craters.
Combat History & Battle Records
Making its combat debut during the Nivelle Offensive in May 1917, the Saint-Chamond proved ill-suited to cratered no-man's-land. However, in late 1918 during open mobile warfare, its powerful 75 mm gun proved exceptionally lethal in breaking German field artillery positions.
