Design Overview & Tactical Role
The British Mark I was the very first combat tank in world history. Engineered by Sir William Tritton and Major Walter Wilson to break the horrific trench-warfare stalemate of the Western Front, its distinctive rhomboidal all-around track layout enabled it to cross 9-foot trenches and crush barbed-wire entanglements. It operated with eight crew members inside a deafening, carbon-monoxide-filled hull requiring four men to coordinate steering and shifting gears.
Combat History & Battle Records
On the morning of September 15, 1916, at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (part of the Battle of the Somme), Mark I tanks crawled out of the morning mist towards German trenches, creating immense shock and panic, and forever altering the nature of land warfare.
