Design Overview & Tactical Role
Named after British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the Churchill infantry tank was engineered to cross shell-cratered no-man's-land and scale impassable obstacle banks. In its definitive Mk VII variant, frontal armor was reinforced to an astounding 152 mm—exceeding the frontal thickness of the German Tiger I. Its long tracks allowed it to scale steep slopes that no other tank could navigate.
Combat History & Battle Records
Overcoming disastrous early trials at the Dieppe Raid (1942), Churchills triumphed in Tunisia (scaling Djebel Djaffa) and spearheaded the 79th Armoured Division as Hobart's 'Funnies' (flamethrowing Crocodiles, bridge-layers, and AVRE bunker-busters) on D-Day.
