Design Overview & Tactical Role
The Sherman Firefly was a brilliant British field modification that solved the Western Allies' desperate shortage of heavy anti-tank firepower in Normandy. By squeezing the massive British Ordnance QF 17-pounder gun sideways into a modified Sherman turret and adding an external armored box on the turret rear for the radio, the Firefly fired deadly tungsten sabot (APDS) rounds capable of piercing the front armor of any German Panther or Tiger at battle ranges.
Combat History & Battle Records
German tank commanders quickly recognized the immense danger posed by the Firefly and issued orders to prioritize and destroy Fireflies first before engaging standard Shermans. British crews famously painted counter-shading wavy camouflage on the long 17-pounder barrels to disguise them as shorter 75 mm guns.
